LK has been a trading name in the metrology industry since 1963 and the brand was acquired by various companies through the years, most recently by Nikon in 2009.
A Company called ASF Metrology, based in Italy, bought out the CMM (coordinate measurement machines) business in 2018, and this is now trading as a LK Metrology Ltd.
In addition, there are ongoing concerns around succession planning in the production area of the business, recognising the wealth of knowledge and experience in the production team and the loss of this as a result of the age profiles in this area of the business. To address this, LK expressed the need for support with a recruitment campaign for engineering apprentices, so LK could attract, develop young talent to be their engineers of the future.
How has this funding helped your business?
Hannah Mills, HR Manager said “We have a number of Managers who have moved in to management roles as they were the “natural fit”, but they have received no formal management training from us and we would be failing them if we didn’t address this. The first year of trading is critical for any business and with a more effective management team, we hope to increase staff morale and individual/team/business performance through the challenging times ahead
In addition, we have recognised for some time that we need to address age profiling within our engineering and production areas. We have a highly knowledgeable, skilled team of engineers who are responsible for designing and building our machines, but some key people in these areas are nearing retirement in the next 5 years, which is a big risk for us. As a result, we have decided to recruit a couple of apprentices, allowing us to begin succession planning activities whilst developing apprentices in to our engineers of the future. We have excellent staff retention in our engineering and production areas and we feel that we can offer the right apprentices a challenging and rewarding career, with plenty of exposure and variety in their workload.
As we haven’t recruited apprentices at LK for quite some time, we felt as though we needed some support in terms of selecting the right qualification, the right training provider, the right delivery model and we also needed advice on what we should expect to pay apprentices in order to be competitive. Having access to this support will be a huge help to us and will really speed things up.
