These include IT, leadership and management, as well as a comprehensive range of vocationally-relevant courses targeting specific sectors. Our training programmes are designed to address skills gaps within local businesses, with a focus on the LEPs’ priority sectors to help boost the local economy in Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire.

Creative & Digital

  • The creative & digital sector in D2N2 is home to 5,615 businesses.
  • There is high demand for specialist skills within the creative & digital industry, including for advanced digital skills. Employers require their employees to be up-to-date with the latest technological advances.
  • Skills shortages tend to be concentrated in the digital sub-sectors, rather than the creative sub-sectors, of the industry.
  • A key emerging opportunity for the creative & digital sector is to increase sector marketing and visibility

Food & Drink Manufacturing

  • The manufacture of food and drink is an important sector of the D2N2 economy, particularly within the Peak District National Park, Newark and Sherwood, Bassetlaw and Amber Valley.
  • There is potential for the food and drink manufacturing sector to make a significant contribution to the future growth of the D2N2 economy. Key opportunities for the sector include increasing exporting, investing in product innovation and supporting new low impact production technologies.
  • The sector provides employment in roles ranging from high tech, professional and managerial occupations, including food scientists and engineers, to lower skilled roles appealing to a broad section of the workforce.
  • A skilled workforce is important for the success of the sector, with many jobs requiring hands-on and practical skills.

Health & Social Care

  • D2N2 has 3,170 employing enterprises in the HSC sector with a roughly equal number of D2 and N2.
  • It is a significant source of employment accounting for 12% of total D2N2 employment with almost 126,000 jobs.
  • 88% of health sector establishments report that they have provided training for their employees in the proceeding 12 months compared to 67% in the local economy.
  • Skills shortages are particularly prevalent within certain job roles. In the area, there is a need for more Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Registered Nurses (Band 5), Acute Medical Practitioners, Emergency Care and General Practice Specialists. Within Derbyshire there is a need for 100% more Advanced Clinical Medical Practitioners.

Life Sciences

  • Life sciences is a growing sector nationally and globally, with an ageing population, increasing health consciousness, new technologies and tightening healthcare budgets increasing the demand for innovative healthcare
  • The life sciences sector in D2N2 is home to 200 SME businesses
  • The life Sciences sector particularly faces skills gaps in: mathematics and ICT, knowledge of bioinformatics, statistics and data mining, as well as health economics and outcomes.
  • There is a shortage of experienced professionals, such as those with experience of translational medicine and clinical pharmacology.

Low Carbon

  • The sector presents a variety of opportunities for both employment generation and to reduce carbon emissions within the D2N2 economy.
  • However, recent research estimated that there were 35,000 jobs in the low carbon sector across the East Midlands in 2013 and the sector has experienced growth nationally since 2010.
  • The significance of climate change and the low carbon economy is likely to present commercial opportunities for a significant proportion of the D2N2 business base either through the development and provision of low carbon goods and services, or through savings in areas such as energy or waste reduction, providing a market for local low carbon economy businesses.
  • A skilled workforce is important for the success of the sector. Many jobs require hands-on and practical skills. However, typically low pay in the sector can act as a disincentive for the potential workforce. The sector struggles to recruit staff with higher level skills required for occupations such as shift managers and product development specialists.

Transport Manufacturing & Engineering

  • Skills shortages are prevalent within the sector, with shortages in occupations such as engineering technicians, welding roles and production managers. Industry experience is also a key requirement for many employers in the sector, along with knowledge of machinery, and experience in sales and repair.
  • Technological change directly affects the skills required by the sector, with increasing requirements for higher levels of ICT skills, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), and knowledge of specialist technologies.
  • The Engineering and Transport Equipment Manufacturing Sector is home to over 22,000 businesses in the D2N2 area.
  • Over 3,000 new rail engineering level 3 graduates (A level equivalent) are required just to maintain current skills levels. At least 7000 more level 4 advanced technicians will be required across the sector. HS2 will require 600 advanced rail engineering technicians (level 4-6+) each year from 2019 onwards.

Transport & Logistics

  • The transport and logistics sector within D2N2 is home to 2,625 businesses.
  • The sector plays a key role in the success of many other sectors, it provides the means through which supplies are obtained and goods are transported to the local market, the national market and international markets.
  • There are particular shortages of qualified lorry drivers and skills relating to supply chain management – key elements of a successful sector.
  • As well as attracting younger workers, it is vital that training is available to equip people with the required skills to ensure they are ‘work-ready’. Employers, Local Authorities, the Local Enterprise Partnership, Schools and Colleges all have a role to play here.

Visitor Economy

  • The visitor economy sector in D2N2 is home to 5,700 business
  • D2N2 attracts over 70 million visitors a year (a combination of day and night visitors), contributing over £3bn to the local economy
  • The combined Visitor Economy and Retail sector employs 171,000 people within the LEP area.
  • Skills shortages in the visitor economy have been identified in roles including chefs, customer service staff and hospitality management.
